An Invitation from Rufus

Hello,

I can say that I’m both very lucky and extremely proud to have had the pleasure of visiting Cuba as well as performing there in the past. Now, we have the opportunity to experience the music, arts, food and culture together.

From September 21 through September 25, I’ll be hosting Wainwright Libre, Rufus in Havana. We’ll be staying at the Melia Miramar hotel and get a fantastic opportunity to really dig into the culture of Cuba together – in addition I’ll be performing a couple of exciting shows for you!

I grew up in Montreal, Quebec, and there was a connection between the two places, as people visited Cuba frequently, even if it was primarily about enjoying those beautiful beaches. I remember Ry Cooder made Buena Vista Social Club with Wim Wenders in the nineties. That gave me a clearer lens into the country, even though it barely scratched the surface.

The first time I went to Cuba was in 2013, and it was amazing to see Havana. It feels more like New York than Miami. Simply put, the city is massive. The architecture is stunning, with an incredibly stately nature to it all; it’s all very seductive in a sense. The people are warm, welcoming, and eager-to-meet-you, and they’re very open right now. I’m excited to experience all of that again. I’ll be showing you around. I do know some secrets, but you’ll have to wait to see what they are once we’re there together!

I’ve performed in Cuba before, but we’re going to do something a little different this time. The first performance, just for you, will be a private, stripped-down, solo show. We’ll also be playing a public show, and I have some surprises in store for this one, but I will tell you that I’ll be playing alongside some of Cuba’s best musicians, some of the greatest musicians in the world.

It’s an honor to be asked to do something like this. The fact that you might build a little vacation around following me to an interesting destination is very humbling as a musician and something I could never have dreamed of. I can’t wait to explore this amazing culture with you. I think it’s important to remain open and proactive about sharing who we are as a society, engaging in cultural exchanges, learning about other people, and really enhancing America’s reputation as ambassadors.

I hope you walk away from the trip with new friends, memories, and a sense of the interesting realism of the place and the fantastical dream world that it can also engender. Cuba has an amazing mix of both elements. You see things that are very true while also very mysterious and ephemeral. It pivots between those two elements in a wonderful way. It’s really beautiful. The people are gorgeous, and the weather ain’t too bad!

I hope you love it as much as I do.

Sincerely,
Rufus Wainwright

When one says ‘Latin Music,’ it’s a pretty broad term. Whether it’s Cuban music, Mexican music, or Brazilian music, there’s so much to choose from. Cuban music itself is one of the monolithic statues of that genre. It’s a real honor to go down there and be a part of that in some small way.

Schedule

My first trip was about four years ago, I wanted to visit before Castro died. I just felt that would be an interesting and historical field trip to visit this place while he was still alive. I actually did that twice. I didn’t meet him or anything, but I did get the opportunity to meet a couple members of his family.

Your Arrival in Havana

You will arrive in Havana in the afternoon for a 4pm check-in at the lovely Melia Havana Hotel. After an orientation and welcome reception at the hotel, your Havana getaway will get under way with an hour-long tour of the city in an old American convertible. Drive the Malercon, along the water and next to the buildings created by architectural greats and American gangsters alike! See the medieval city of Old Havana and the cold war-era Plaza De La Revolucion – all at sunset. From there, go to one of Havana’s finest restaurants followed by a welcoming concert by the great Interactivo.

On each of the next three days, we will start in the morning with one-of-a-kind cultural adventures in Havana. Among the trips we are offering will be walking tours of Havana, visits with leading artists and musicians, museum tours, architectural tours, salsa dancing, cigar tasting and much more! This will be followed by lunch then another round of cultural fun with our Cuban hosts. After that, we have optional activities for those of you who want to take advantage of them or chill time, for those who wouldn’t mind sitting by the pool, relaxing, and catching up from the busy day. And at nights, we go out to a new restaurant each day for a wonderful meal followed by wonderful concerts.

Rufus Wainwright will be performing twice in the middle of all this! On the second night of the trip he will be performing just for our group at Teatro Bellas Artes, located in the heart of the historic Bellas Artes Museum in Old Havana. On the final night of the trip, Rufus will perform again, this time to a Cuban audience plus all of us at Teatro Mella. For his performance, Rufus will be joined by a full orchestra and very special guest, Cuban superstar, Carlos Varela! In addition to these two unique performances, Rufus will lead a music discussion and tour with us one afternoon at the Instituto Superior de Arte (known as ISA) and he will be pleased to meet everyone taking the trip with him at a meet and greet and signing session!
